About Us

Throughout my nursing career, I was the only Latina in the room: in nursing school, in the operating room, in leadership. Having been the only one too many times throughout my life, disappointedly, it is something I have come to expect. As my career progressed and I learned more about quality and safety, I knew the voices of my people were not being heard by the non-Latino staff taking care of them.

As the toll of the pandemic continued and with the racial murders of 2020, towards the end of 2020, I was done. Exhausted and demoralized by the broken healthcare system. While I was a member of the most trusted profession in the US, I felt overlooked and isolated by my profession. An avid reader, I turned to stories or books written by Latina|o|x nurses to help invigorate me. To this day, there are no books about or written by Latina|o|x nurses. I knew I had to write my story and share the stories of so many other brave, talented, generous, nurturing Latinas in Nursing.

Latinas in Nursing is a compilation of the beautiful and powerful stories of the challenges, glories, triumphs, defeats, resiliency, growth, and discovery these influential Latina nurses share about their inspiring journeys. This book is a starting point and gateway for Latinas in the nursing profession to what they deserve: support and resources for growth; opportunities to continue to improve nursing and healthcare; and increased and strengthened resources for robust pipelines and support systems to increase and retain the number of Latinas in nursing, nursing leadership, and nursing academia, across the U.S. and eventually, across the world.
